According to oldest son, while some old school plumbers still like sweating 
copper, these are very popular in the trade. He says they're quite substantial 
and he's never seen one leak unless it was improperly installed.

I can see the advantages of those, but seems somewhat like a "sharkbite" in 
that it relies on an O-ring to make the seal, which will eventually start to 
leak years later. But I've had sweated copper joints eventually leak also, so I 
don't think anything is really permanent when it comes to household plumbing.
