Most cars have (had?) the ability to shut off that "shut down while sitting"
malarkey.

I don't think anybody really believes it helps anything.

I was driving around in Mrs.Bob‘s Subaru today while she sat with her mother at
hospice. On two separate occasions, it almost did not start from the stop/start
ridiculousness that occurs when coming to a traffic light. I called the Subaru
store, told him I was coming in because I knew the battery was still under
warranty and it was crapping out.
Got  got it in pretty much instantly, they verified the battery was dying, and
I got a brand new free one and I was sent on my way.
While being observant while waiting in the service waiting area, I learned the
three other people were there getting their batteries replaced as well. When I
signed the papers and grabbed my keys, I was talking to the Subie boy about it
and he said that they have replaced about 10 to 15 batteries a day over the
last month or so. The last two months of Arizona has killed more batteries than
they care to even think about he said.
Oh AZ…. it won’t rust your car out but it’ll get you in many, many different
ways.
