Do I have ANY hope of successfully using the original 240d tranny with

up here to Kanuckistan :-0....

Many 240D and 300D non-turbo 4 and 5 speed transmissions were used to convert 617.95 engines. Biggest problem is the life of the clutch on the 240 flywheel and that might not be too bad. A heavier clutch/flywheel from a 617.91 non-turbo diesel or an M110 (from a 280E/C/TE) would be better I'm told but these will be in scarce supply in the US (rather common in the rest of the world).

There is virtually NO advantage to converting a 4 speed auto to a 4 speed manual transmission. Of the line acceleration will be worse and fuel economy will see almost NO improvement. With a 5 speed, at least highway fuel economy can be improved noticeably (but off the line acceleration will still be poor).
