Umm the thermostate deisgn in the mercedes engine is a little unique-- there are two plates, one opens as the t-stat warms and the other closes... the opening plate allows coolant to the radiator while the closing plate blocks the bypass. Removing the t-stat allows water to flow through both. You would be better to modify a thermostat to stay in the full "open" position, and will find it useful when you do your coolant flushes. -j.
