"My" ML500 had that issue, took me a long time to figure it out. I sent
the guy a msg suggesting he look at that. I did an extensive writeup on
the whole thing and posted it on BW

That’s probably not too far off as I recall. I think that the electrical part
of the ignition switch on the W163 was problematic in earlier years. When I had
my first W163 I think I read up on this when diagnosing some warning lamps.
