Couple things here:

There is a release for the shifter you can trip using a small screwdriver or a 
pen, as I recall.

The W210 shifter uses a lockout solenoid to than prevent shifting out of park. 
It can get sticky or even fail, however, as I recall, whne it fails it fails 
open, meaning you can move the shifter to whereever you like regardless of the 
car’s mode. My 98 W210 wagon was like this, and I found that the solenoid is 
not a service part, you have to replace the whole shifter assembly. Nope!
