I never drove a 2 stroke, but the later cars with the Ford V-4 forklift engine had the same gearbox. The freewheel was an oddity in the V-4, but pretty important in a two stroke without oil injection. Coasting to a stop with the throttle shut and the drivetrain spinning the engine was no big deal, but engine braking down a mountain with little to no fuel would result in damage from oil starvation.
