The transmission will work either way, but when I did roughly the same on my
w116 the shop recommended I stay with the earlier tranny (for durability
reasons). In retrospect I would probably do the opposite next time, as I
find the later transmissions more driveable. The control linkages are
different but that is an easy swapover (see next para).

All the sundries will have to be changed, and you may have to do some minor
fabrication for the hookup to the vacuum pump (memory is hazy on that one).
And on my car, we needed an air filter housing from a 1980 w116 SD to match
the new route of the fresh air intake hose.

Whomsoever does the swap HAS TO get both engines side by each and examine
EVERYTHING carefully before the transplant goes in. Don't ask how I (and one
now dead wrench) know that.
