rear wiper looks to have ED. Run it and see if it works, it might just
need to be moved on the splined shaft. If the rear hatch was damaged
and replaced or painted maybe the badging was not replaced, badge
delete is an option from new too. I'd definitely get more detail on any
damage if the seller knows anything, but if it looks OK might not be
worth worrying about except as a negotiating point.

Knowing that the Carfax reported minor damage, does anyone get nervous
when they see a sagging rear wiper in a lack of badging? Or am I being
a goofball?
I will probably go scan this today and look at the color in person.

Yes, your scanner will work just fine. Use the same procedure to
fire it up as you did with your W163 and you’ll get the same results.

Seller finally responded.
carfax reports minor damage in 2014 but it doesn’t show what area of
the vehicle was effected. Otherwise it was purchased new in Beverly
Hills and serviced there regularly until 2013, 55k miles, sold to
someone in Bakersfield and was regularly serviced there until seller
buying it in June (seller is a guy trying to be a small, independent
dealer).
He said he’d bring it over to my side of town so I can see it. I
just might take him up on it…unless the CarFax should make me nervous.
Also, could I scan it with this scanner I use on the W163?

It’s a pump, a valve, a reservoir tank, and 2 struts in front and
2 bags in back. There’s a controller somewhere. The bags are
relatively inexpensive, the struts more. The valve snd pump are
cheap. Nothing particularly difficult to swap. I’m not sure why
people get all bent about airmatic given the benefits esp in an
SUV. If you’re buying an expensive German vehicle thrr we n don’t
be a cheapass about its primary features. Get a DAS system you can
scan diagnose and test the system and you’re halfway there.

Floyd has some insight into the pneumatic suspension, but I don’t
think it’s problematic based on what I’ve heard/read. I believe
it’s a system similar to what’s on the W220/211, but not sure as
I’ve never owned a car with it. If so, these are pretty simple,
the struts can be expensive to replace if they leak, which I don’t
think is a common issue.
Good catch - I didn’t notice the debadging. You can buy the
badging from MB all ready to stick on the car, if it’s still
available.

How problematic is the pneumatic suspension? Also, I wonder why
the badging is removed? Do people think it makes it somehow look

Bob,
It’s not so much the ML550, but the W164. It’s a major
improvement over the W163s, far more car-like while still
retaining a lot of the truck qualities that made the W163 useful.
I’m not sure the smaller displacement W164s do much better
economy-wise, so having the ML550 does provide some advantages
when it comes to power and towing. Amazingly, my ML550 got
better mileage while towing a UHaul car carrier with the CL600
on it than running empty. Go figure!
I love mine, despite the crappy mileage. If I’m just tooling
around town I’ll be lucky to hit 16 mpg, but on the highway,
depending on load, I’ll easily hit the mid and upper teens. I
don’t drive that much anyway, so the difference doesn’t really
matter a whole lot to me. It’s a far more comfortable ride, I
think, far less truck-like than the W163, and has more creature
comforts, too.
Mine is approaching 200k without any real issues to speak of. I
bought it with 175k on the clock two years ago for $6500, so the
one you’ve posted isn’t far off based on price and mileage.
Provenance is important on these, and while there’s no major
issues with the W164s that I know of, good maintenance is always
important. This one is really loaded up, with pneumatic
suspension, Parktronic (which is pretty rare on these) as well
as the rear seat entertainment system (DVD player.)
Nice example. I would definitely consider this one if I was
looking for another W164.

Since it's still running just fine and my garage is 110 degress
typically during the day, I am not enthused to do the CP on my
ML. I did just replace the driver's rear window regulator
I think I want to move on from this W163 and maybe get
something like this. Many of you dig ML550s.
