Actually this is the first time I actually heard anything about Audi making those comments. I'm betting the media was responsible for those comments. Actually I don't care if it was all a scam or not, the point was that in the corporate world, you NEVER -- even more so on overpriced gear such as Audis were, at that time -- call your customers stupid. Not with the demographic Audi was reaching for (essentially wealthy professionals looking for a little more excitement than a Benz provided at the time). Audi could have come out with any number of creative strategies, before they called their customers stupid. It is one of the classic blunders of PR history, and it almost cost them the entire North American market. It also cost them a fortune in Madison Avenue $$$ to get themselves back on track.
