I don't think you'll see all that much more MPG from a 240D over a 300D. I
could consistantly get 28mpg out of my '83 240D 4spd manual. I'd think a 300D
should be able to do 26mpg pretty handily.
  My '85 190D 2.2l 5spd regularly stays around 38mpg with a high of 43mpg. My
new 110 mile a day commute (up from 90 miles) seems to have raised the mpg
slightly but it'll be a few weeks before I know for sure.

lokking at this one but now some loon just jumped the price up forget

Ok so let me get this straight... That entire 100lb 20ft long exhaust
system is held up by one point at the rear end and the turbo at the other?

Ok, I may be exaggerating (a LITTLE). But I didn't think the exhaust was
that bad on my 83' 300D. But it got pretty loud one night and then I
thought I heard some scraping and sure enough the flange on the front end of
the "middle" piece of exhaust (I count 3 separate exhaust pieces) was no
longer attached to the middle piece. So I took it and the rear section it
was attached to off and it did have several holes in it and was considerably
thinner on the bottom than the top. I was hoping I could just leave it off,
but it was a tad more noisy than I really wanted. So then I thought well,
I'll just try the middle section attached. but there's no hangers at all on
the middle section and I don't see any obvious good locations for trying to
tie up the rear end of the middle section. So the guy I bought the car from
included an entire (well ok just the middle and rear sections) exhaust. I
thought it was Mercedes cause it looks almost identical, but it says Tesi
made in Italy.
So anyway, I got the new middle and rear sections bolted together and hooked
up with it's 4 hangars on the far back muffler. Did that maybe a couple
weeks ago. Well, I took it on it's longest trip so far up near Canada
around 260 miles each way. Well, around 70 or so miles I thought I could
hear a little more of the turbo. Which I really like, but was a bit worried
about why I was hearing it. So, about 180 miles in and it was quite
apparent that there was a lot more exhaust noise. But I didn't hear the
exhaust dragging, so decided to wait until around 220 miles or so when I
needed to refill the veggie tank. Sure enough it seems there is a flexible
section that comes out of the turbo, and it was no longer connected to the
flexible section (there is only supposed to be one section of flex, not two)
attached to the rest of the exhaust. Luckily though apparently that is long
enough to lay on the tranny mount and so it was not dragging and the exhaust
seems to be aimed down enough to not be causing much trouble where it is. I
am however wondering a bit as to whether the cops will think this level of
noise excessive. It's not TOO bad at "normal" revs, but when accelerating
it can get quite loud.

So... I thought for kicks I'd go look at a couple places, and it seeat best
it's some $120 for this little piece of flex exhaust pipe. Hmm.. I'm
contemplating finding a piece of stovepipe or something that would "kind of"
connect the two pieces. Not completely seal, but at least knock the noise
down some... Actually, I'm thinking as much about how I don't want to deal
with the back of the turbo and rusted bolts or what not as much as I am
about not wanting to spend the money for that stupid piece of pipe...
Anyone found any alterior solutions?

Levi (:
