Of course this is all moot if you have the discipline to bid only as much as you are willing to pay, based on what the item is worth...

Thats how eBay works, a bidder makes a maximum bid, which shows up as the next bid based on the current bid increment, then eBay automatically raises it up to the maximun as people bid against you. So you run a no reserve auction, then a few days later, bid your reserve. There are car dealers that make livings doing this on eBay. The trick is to use proxy servers to make it look like the accounts originate and bid at independant IPs, other wise eBay will catch you and suspend your accounts.
