Part's guy told me they reved the lifters about 8 times over the production life to make them harder. Early valve seals wore out quickly, consuming lots of oil, but easier to replace. Check the rear doors, again earlier models had door handles attached via two bolts and some plastic tabs overzealous pre-teens would yank on door and break tabs off, then handle would work loose, fixing require new door handle/armrest. With my 88 300TE over say 200K miles we averaged 18-19 mpg, never really saw anything over 20ish. But perhaps fuel mixture was always too rich.
