Hi Les,
Its hard to say if $1000 is fair without knowing the prevailing labor rate
in your area. But think of what's involved. The fuel injection and intake
system must come off - the exhaust must be released, the distr removed with
the wires, the cam covers removed, the timing chain released, the head bolts
removed carefully, then the head can be removed.
The head is then lifted off and a machine shop checks the mating surface for
flatness. If needed it will be stripped of components and the mating
surface machined until it is perfectly flat. Then it is reassembled and
back at the shop.
While the head is being done, the shop is inspecting the engine and draining
the cooling system and flushing the oil to remove all water. This must be
done quickly before the water starts damaging the soft metals. The mating
surface of the engine top is also inspected for flatness but it does not
often attention.
Then the components are reassembed. Cam timing must be done, The timing
chain must aling properly with the components it engages, etc.
If the labor rate is $100/hour they'll only be working 10 hours before
reaching $1000 - they'll be working pretty quickly.
I don't recall how many hours it takes to do this work - it would take me
longer than 10 hours but I'm old, slow and careful. A shop that does this
all the time should do it pretty quick. But IMO, 10 hours is pretty quick.

Subject: [MBZ] 1990 300SE - Head Gasket
Dear Mz Friends,
I have an offer to replace a head gasket on my 1990 300SE at $1,000. How
does that sound?
What's the probability of the head being warped? The car overheated but
never pegged the temp guage. I have oil mixed in the anti-freeze but not
the other way around.
If the head is warped - what additional costs can I expect (i.e. to have
the same shop do it when it is down with the head gasket replacement?
Thanks very much,
Les

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.
I have one in .44 mag. I like .44 mag, don't ask me why. I prefer
the medium loads, not the hot stuff. If I was after deer, the 30-30
would be a better choice (in 94's) I'm sure. I don't have one of
those, but I do have a pot-gun in 45-70/.22 that's probably good
for taking rabbit-chasing deer. Get the rabbit for lunch, and
the deer for dinner! (I don't hunt, however. Only old Mercedes.)
useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?
Sure. Depends on your purpose, of course. For swimming armed in
salt water it's hard to beat a Glock, for example. For pure esthetics,
though, the 1911 is pretty sweet. Your best bet is to own one of
everything!

the 300Se /103 engine seems to be sluggish from idle to about 2200RPM,
then the acceleration is quite brisk.
the engine has freshly replaced electric consumables including the
throttle plate potentiometer, fuel pump and filter.
I have slightly leaned out then richened the mixture but still, around 2200
RMP is the point when the engine becomes brisk and eager to pull to the
limit. Is it a erratic EHA unit ?
Input will be most appreciated
thanks

Iron equals wear on steel or cast iron parts, but if it is indeed 20%
less than the last oil change, you may be correct.
You may also be seeing less wear, too. It's not carbon being released
so much a "hard sludge" being dissolved, though.

Check the timing chain, they dont' last all that long in an M103
(single row chain!), and your symptoms sound a great deal like late
valve timing -- the power is still there, but it doesn't show up until
high rpm.
