it's the new style as of less than a year ago and when my rack damper bolt was
bad/out of adjustment the engine did alot of rocking at idle all the
time...that isn't the case this time. Once things heat up - just a bit - like
5 blocks of driving, everything is perfectly normal.

adjusted valves Saturday night and no change whatsoever, unfortunately.

I'm just taking a WAG, but If your valves are just a bit tight I could see
where it might make enough difference before the engine could warm up a bit
and combustion chamber pressure would improve from the increased
temperature. The glow plugs would possibly be enough to get it to start but
when they shut off you fall short.

Yup...a lot of times with one bad plug, the engine will start, but idle
slow and rough because the cylinder with the bad plug is misfiring. As
the engine warms up a little bit the cylinder with the dead plug will
eventually follow along. Often during the time when it's misfiring
you'll see white smoke (actually unburned diesel mist) from the exhaust.

Low compression on one cylinder can also cause this, but a bad plug is
much more likely.
