My SDL would do the same thing if the delivery valve seals leak and the car
was parked nose up and the tank had less than 1/4 level.  Adding fuel and
getting it level would let it run okay, albeit the fuel still leaked until
new seals were installed.

I believe there are some known problems with fuel line leakage on that
car.

On the older (OM603) engines, the o-rings and or fuel lines at the
pre-heater thermostat can leak, and allow the tank to draw air back
into the lines, resulting in hard starts and stalling when first
started.  These can be a real problems to find, as they do not leak
fuel out most of the time.  If you can find a steep slope to park the
car on, or can lift the rear up on jack stands overnight, fuel will
then leak out of the failed seal.  The car will also start properly....
