Andrew - they want to make sure you didn't just copy a VIN number through the windshield, as the complete production record includes the key coding. A thief could then, in theory, make off with someone else's car. I was told that a title or registration paper would suffice. Of course, that was at the main Classic Center in Fellbach; MBUSA/Irvine Classic Center may make things easier by just omitting the key info.
