Check air filter condition and timing chain stretch! A dirty air filter is a common cause in turbo diesels (and if bad enough in normally aspirated diesels) and timing chain stretch approaching 7-8 degrees WILL result in smoke. So can poor injector condition, incorrect valve clearances and poor compression.
