I know the story. I grew up in a buy-local house with both parents being union reps. We were a GM family going through lots of GM vehicles as dad got a new one every 3 years. That was impressive in the days before personal leases were popular. Now I own 3 German cars and 2 Japanese motorcycles. Of course, I bought them all used, so I didn't help out the parent company in any noticeable way.
