I would think that having a possibly poor ground connection from the battery might be asking to "fry" some expensive electronics, since the alternator/regulator needs to have a solid reference, or all bets are off as to what the system voltage might be. I'd recommend removal of any possible "opens" in the grounding system, especially of the battery.

It "clunks" rather resoundingly - I think it's all the way forward. I
think there's something else going on - a resident gremlin, or that
funky switch in the battery ground cable. Didn't get a chance to
remove it today - maybe tomorrow if the rain isn't too bad.
