Jiggle the shifter in N or P as you try to start it.

Listers,

I'm going to take a look tomorrow at a cheap 123 300D---cheap because it
won't start. Seller says it ran fine for a while, now "doesn't make a
sound" when the key is turned, but the battery is good and the headlights
turn on. What do I check first?

I seem to remember this being discussed before and an explanation being
given of how to bypass the ignition switch (maybe by jumping the starter
directly to the battery long enough to turn the engine over and get it
started?). I can't think what else could likely be wrong, given those
symptoms, other than the starter, ignition switch, or the wiring inbetween.

Thanks,
Alex Chamberlain
