A Diesel without an ADA or ALDA will certainly notice it! My '70 220D lost a lot of power, and smoked badly in the mountains! My '76 300D had a manual adjustment on the IP for altitude - I think it was in 1000 meter increments (but that was a long time ago).
I did notice that diesels don't even notice the thinner air and there were alot of diesel cars and trucks there. Harry
