It's a matter of having multiple user accounts defined. When you buy a PC with XP pre-loaded, you have only one (the default admin account) that logs on automatically at power up. If you have multiple users, you have to pick one (and log in if you have created passwords) at boot time. There may be a way to define one to auto-log in by default. Also some software can interfere with the log in capabilities -- for example when we installed a LinkSys USB wireless network interface, the driver software disabled "fast user switching".
