In a 4 stroke radial engine, it's so that the firing order can be every other cylinder.
Now that makes total sense. Skip every other one, and then it's two revs per firing. Just what a 4-stroke needs. Also, without the multiple phased crank journals of the inline engine you're very limited on your options for firing order. -- Jim
