The old epa system over-rated mileage of gassers. For diesels, it was pretty accurate. the prius is currently over-rated in many ways, not just mileage. A well tuned diesel whether 40 years old, or 25 or less will get better mileage than gassers, and when driven by some drivers can exceed the epa estimates.
