Well just to be difficult I could argue that the M103 is less complex than the M104 and from a maintenance and repair point of view is superior to the 104. However performance wise the 104 beats the 103 design in every way.

Uh uh. More power than a 300E, less then an E320. The M104 engine is superior
to the M103 in every way. Aside from the cylinder count, the old 2.8 in the
'72 250 has no relationship to the M104 and a good thing it is. Ten more mpg
hiway comes to mind, for one thing. I owned both.
