You are comparing the 2.8 in the 280E to the 3.0 103 in earlier vehicles. I was talking about 1993 model year cars. In 93, the 300E had the 3.2 104 which was 217 or so hp.

Seems like the 2.8L at 197 hp is indeed peppier than the 177 hp M103
3.0L. Though, according to this entry, there's a difference in power

Kaleb, are you thinking of the 2.6L?  The M104 has a LOT more power
than the M103, even the 2.8L, I've driven one.  Road rocket, pretty
much.
