It's like everything else, if ebay don't pull their finger out and meet customer demand then they will overtaken by someone who does. Ebay does not have a monopoly on internet auctions but is dominant due to size. Personally I would like to see a free auction site where advertisers pay the bill.

It goes nowadays a little further than that. You can set a max bid and
it will overbid anything below that, one bid at a time. But now you
have the option to set an amount to slap on a bid at the last second
to exceed it. To me, that is not an auction any longer. Its just plain
supporting creedy lazyy people with more money than brain.
