I have had thermostat bypass hoses on Fords fail. Ugh. Hose 2 in. long clamped to metal nipples on both ends. Almost impossible to replace with water pump installed.
Sounds like Mercedes used essentially the same system there for awhile. On some cars it's even fairly easy to get to. -- Jim
