yes, seems silly, until you look at it further; BioDiesel standards
adopted y the US are somewhat different than those of the EU. US
standards ("ASTM D6751 - Specification for Biodiesel Fuel Blend Stock")
were allegedly based on those proposed by the NBB, who is in bed with
the Soy Growers; not surprisingly, there are some facets of the standard
that are completely irrelevant to the performance of the fuel, but are
seemingly there only to make sure that the standard would only allow
BioD made specifically from Virgin Soy oil, and even then the standard
is for a B20 "blend" (only 20% BioD with 80% #2). most EU fuel is made
from Rapeseed, widely considered to make far better BioD. current
regulation of BioD is a mess, mostly due to politics and greed.
it's going to be difficult for any vehicle mfr to safely endorse the
use of US BioD until when (if!) the standards have a little more
honesty/relevance built into them.
cheers!

Pretty silly that they'll put that out on a car to be sold in the US.
All diesel vehicles sold in Germany have been required to be compatible
with bio diesel for a number of years now.

From the 2008 C-Class Owner's Manual
Commercially available diesel may contain 5 % bio-diesel. This proportion
will not affect vehicle performance or wear.
Using diesel fuel that does not comply with EN 590 requirements (or
comparable standards) can lead to increased wear, engine damage and damage to the
exhaust system. Do not use the following:
•
Marine diesel
•
Bio-diesel
•
Vegetable oil
•
Petrol
•
Petroleum
•
Kerosene
•
Heating oil
Do not mix fuels such as these with diesel fuel. Do not use any special
additives. For exceptions, see "Low outside temperatures, flow improvers". The use
of such non-approved fuels and/or fuel additives will result in a restriction
of your warranty entitlement. Do not start the engine if you accidentally
refuelled with the wrong fuel. Otherwise you risk engine damage. Have the fuel
system emptied completely.
Do not use gasoline to refuel vehicles with a diesel engine. Never mix diesel
with gasoline. Even small amounts of gasoline result in damage to the
injection system. Damage caused by adding gasoline is not covered by the warranty.
Bio-diesel (VME fuels, oil methyl ester) and vegetable oil
Your vehicle is not suitable for use with bio-diesel or vegetable oil. The
use of bio-diesel or vegetable oil may lead to increased wear or engine damage.
If you use bio-diesel/vegetable oil or mix diesel with bio-diesel/vegetable
oil, your warranty entitlement will be restricted. Bio-diesel is sometimes
referred to as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME).
