Dan, My question might be similar to Ed's-I am concerned about the corrosion & rust under hood of all of my cars because I live near salt water. I se a lot of white corrosion in the engine compartments, esp. on the aluminum. Fellow RI lister John Peterson uses some kind of marine rust retardant spray on his 300D. All suggestions appreciated, as I need to clean the engines and protect them both summer and winter. Thanks, Dwight

You can probably find this or something similar at an industrial engine supply house, or possibly a truck supply place that would deal with industrial engines like pumps or compressors. Cosmoline is pretty heavy duty stuff, and not something I would put on a working engine or engine compartment. It's meant as a moisture barrier and intended for long term storage. On a related note, there are some really cool things that aircraft engine manufacturers sell now for long term storage on Lycoming and other air-cooled aviation engines. They're plastic tubes that screw into the spark plug ports, and inside the tubes is a dessicant that absorbs any moisture that might form in the cylinder while the engine is mothballed. I'm sure you could use them for long term (such as winter) storage on an automobile engine, too.
