Hey Gary,
This is a new type of scam (fairly new, I guess) where the seller claims
the car is overseas and is too expensive to title/register/insure and drive
so they want to sell & ship it back. I went into this with a '97 Porsche
993 Cabr offered for $30k incl shipping to a city near the buyer. Once the
buyer checked the car, final payment was expected. Of course, he wanted a
deposit to ship it - which I believe is money that will disappear with the
seller. I told the seller I had a friend near Italy (where he and the car
supposedly were) who could come by, check the car, pay the final price and
drive it back to UK to keep for me. The price was $10k-$15k below many
asking prices for that year/model - although some are harder to sell --
After suggesting my firend would come by to inspect and pay for it, he
stopped communicating - something I suspect he's good at - especially once
he has your "deposit".
Anyway - yep, it's a scam.
