I don't think you need to play with the IP *unless* there's a reason to 
suspect it has changed without help from you or a technician - if youfound 
the hold down bolts loose then it may have changed, but if it's the same it 
was when it ran good, I woud not think it changed without help.  Uness 
there's internal damage to the IP or it's timing device -

Does it produce smoke all the time?  Only when cold?  only when warmed up? 
Only when idling?  Only when driving at speed?  All the time?  Is engine 
power missing or low?
