Thanks Andrew and Darrell - Do I assume correctly that I have to remove the 
steering wheel to get at this or is the
stalk removable in another manner?

There is a rather straightforward procedure to remove the stalk and file the
detent with a small triangular file to regain the "hold", but as I haven't
done this in 20 years I can only misinform you if I try to remember the
details...

BTW, this is a VERY common problem in 108, 109, and W 114/115 cars.
