My uncle used to be a DC crane repairman at Bethlehem Steel (Lackawanna,
NY). These are the cranes that reach out into the yard & pick up 100's of
tons of steel at a time. Part of their safety procedure was to wrap a steel
chain around the track to short out the buss bars because one of the
repairmen was out on a crane one day when someone turned on the power and
"poof", he was gone in a cloud of smoke.

Like ya'll, I had a similar thing happen - forgive if anyone has heard
this story - I was a electricians apprentice working on the USS JFK - in a
small space with a 440V cabinet with 4 big cables sticking out that had been

cut off. The procedure was to tape the cut ends but it had not been done.
I was playing with my screwdriver waiting for my electrician to need me to
do somethingg - I happened to touch a cable end with the s'driver and
KaBoom! The end of the 4" s'driver disappeared in a flash of light and
noise - with bits of molten metal going down my boot top. Thankfully that
was the worst of my injuries. There were Navy personnel onboard who may
have turned the power on disregarding the warning tags that covered the cab.

I found a new career path to follow soon afterward -
;-)
