I might be committing heresy here, but I'm looking for my next car and I saw
a BMW (I know, I know) - 1988 535i, 160Kmi, 1 owner, no rust, "maintained as
if I'd drive it forever."

Any listers out there know anything about these cars? Problem areas?
Should I consider it or run away screaming?

The 535s MAY BE the best driving all around 4 door sedans ever made. A
friend of mine did have trouble with a sheared off oil pump drive shaft which
caused rod bearing failure. I saw the drive shaft and it is long and slender,
probably supposed to flex to absorb pulsations, about 5/16" hex if I recall.
You might google that topic and see if it's a problem.

I would suggest a nice synthetic 0W-30, as opposed to a 50 weight racing oil.

Good luck,
