They are not fast by any means but they will pull a huge load. The TH400 is a good tranny but it is still the weak point in that vehicle. The 4bt has alot of torque and gets the automatics pretty hot. Put a big cooler on it and run syn fluid. I have been looking for one of those vans for a donor for the engine swap in my M37 but have yet to find a great deal on one.
