It's the sulphur that's the lubricant , not pariffin PEter -----Original Message----- From: Tom Hargrave [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 27 August 2007 04:01 To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' Subject: Re: [MBZ] Ultra low sulfur diesel. Trouble for old injector pumps?
Rotary pumps use the fuel as a lubricant & I can see where there would be a problem if ultra-low sulfur diesel has less lubricating properties than the old stuff. But if memory serves me right, it's the paraffin in the diesel that is a lubricant, not the sulfur. Also, rotary pumps rarely last more than 60,000 miles of city driving because the internals are aluminum and they tend to wear fast until they are warm. This was a real issue with the early 80's GM Olds 350 based diesel engines. The same rotary pump that would go 300,000 miles in a cross country truck was dying with 60,000 miles of city driving. Trouble for old injector pumps? Seal leaks are more of a problem with biodiesel than with ultra-low sulfur, but those rotary pumps do NOT like ultra-low diesel at all. I've heard that from several sources, including the guys who rebuild them.
