Did it many times. I'd like to be able to say that it was all from some
fabulous re-engineering on my part, , but it was almost all factory
equipment. about the only things I did to it was a fancy ignition
system. a cam , a high volume fuel pump and an insanely large
carburetter, along with a few minor suspension mods to keep the handling
just a little less terrifying.
We used to have a dead end road out in the middle of the desert where we
used to go to race. About 15 or so miles long, no cross streets, houses,
kids or dogs. I used to love talking guys with the traffic light racers
into going out there. With the 2.21 rear end on that thing, it was a dog
off the line, but I used to just love the look on their faces as they
were grabbing top gear, about the time I was winding out first, and
reaching for second and that's when I'd pass them. there were a few
times I was siting on my hood at the other end when they got there :-)

The thing was an absolute dog off the line though. Just about any small
block could stomp it in a 1/4.

Pontiac put out some insanely fast cars way back when. There used to be
a sheriff in he north end of the Mojave desert about 25 + years ago with
a Grand Am police model, that he seriously hopped up. 455HO with cross
ram dual quads, side pipes ( yup, side pipes on a cop car ) and I'm
pretty sure he had an overdrive manual tranny. I spoke with him at a
diner one time. Real nice guy, he did like to pop the hood and show that
thing off. Nobody got away from that thing, including all the rich guys
from LA in the Ferrari , Lamborghini, Lotus and Masseratis who would
head up there every weekend. A friend with a modified Porsche 6 cyl
passed the guys hiding spot at about 140 and thought he was close enough
to the county line to make it. A few miles later the sheriff passed him
like he was standing still, and kept going. Turned out he was headed to
an accident scene 30 miles away and wasn't even after him.

You can't be too quick to poo-poo some of that old 'mercan iron.
