When I first got the used Mercedes bug, I picked up Frank Barrett's "Mercedes Buyer's Guide" which has some good used info, although his opinions are pretty idiosyncratic. I don't know if he has changed his tune in later editions of the book, but the version I have (just barely new enough to cover the 140 chassis) gives short shrift to diesels, and especially warns against the trap-oxidizer-equipped '86s and '87s.
