Friday I was able to pull the back off the driver's seat and found that
the square drive rod had slipped out of the inside gearbox. I detached
the seat back and drove both pivots separately, no problem. I put it
partially back together with the rod engaging both sides so the car can
be driven. It's possible that the seat back has spread a little so that
the rod is a bit short. We'll see. It's so stiff that I also want to
attempt a mild lubrication of the gearboxes. Not too good, I've found
that the back tips on its own then!

Today I found that the seat back _is_ wider than it ought to be! The
stamped metal rail that ties the seat back sides together along the
lower back broke off. The seat back spreads under weight and the
adjustment rod pops out. I peeled back the leather from the area and
draped a wet towel around everything, clamped the sides together to take
out all the slack, used a Vise-grip C-clamp to pull the rail into place,
wire-brushed the joint, then welded the rail back to the side. I also
did the other side because it was starting to come loose. Clean metal
welds _so_ nicely, I had the 'glue gun' experience today. "Watch out
Honey, I've been welding and you know how that makes me all manly!"

Anyway, with that stitched back together I put on a little black paint
for rust protection, lubed the adjusters, and reassembled the seat. A
little Simple Green was used to lube the seat back panel, that really
helps. The seat works great now.
