I think you are absolutely right but on the other hand, trying to deodarize seems like a good idea in any event. My F150 has the mouldy smell. My 300D has the rubbery smell. Different biology but still an unpleasent smell. The disinfectant is more likely to be successful on the mould but I am not anxious to tear the heater apart on the 300D - especially since I don't drive it in the winter. I only get a little bit of heater use spring and fall. No problem with smell when running the AC so far.

Rubber smell vs mildew smell---inorganic contamination of the HVAC system vs. organic contamination? Different diseases, different cures. I myself spent years chasing down what I thought was mildew in my 300D before concluding that it was actually disintegrating foam from the recirculation flap taking a sauna on the heater core. Symptom was an acrid, burning, rubbery smell---quite different from the smell of mildew or mold growth due to moisture in the HVAC system (usually clogged evaporator drains), which is usually compared to an old gym locker.
