You've noticed that too? Yes, it's hard not to interpret it as an
intentional signal that "hey, you inconvenience me, and get off the
road, bike."

By coincidence, I just found this link on our local bike advocacy
forum. It has to do with solutions in the area of safe bike lanes.

I know this talk doesn't resonate with much of the list, but I'm glad
there are a few. When I do have to drive, I love my Benzes, but as I
said, that's only when I *have to* drive.

Oh, and in the vein of the other discussion about kids in back seats:
There are few better ways to actually slow down a bit and enjoy your
surroundings than on two non-motorized wheels. Look at the trees,
smell the exhaust.

and what's up with (what i call) 'The Passing Drift'? why is it that
so often that an overtaking car that passes a bicycle in the bike lane
'drifts' into the bike lane afterward? is it that they didn't really
notice the cyclist until they'd already passed and they're looking back
in the rear view to see if it's still there, and their already poor
vehicle control skills have them drift to the side they're looking? or
is it just that their lack of focus is causing them to have that much
trouble casually re-establishing a place in a lane after passing?
i used to think that it was an act of outright intentional
intimidation, but it happened to me so much over the last few decades
that i can't believe that any more. as unpopular a technique as it might
initially seem to non-cyclists, it seems like the only way to prevent it
is to actually be farther *out* into the traffic lane more directly in
drivers lines of vision as a *part* of traffic where it requires
overtaking drivers to make more of a conscious effort to negotiate
driving space; then, they don't seem to be looking back at you as an
afterthought, and don't seem to do The Drift as they're perhaps paying
more attention to their space in the lane.
