Seriously I had them both back to back, '83 240D replaced by an '85 190D. The 
190D is faster, handles better, turns tighter and starts easier in cold weather.
Best mileage I've had was 32mpg on the 240D and 43mpg on the 190D. Both were of 
course extreme occurances. I averaged 28mpg on the 240D and around 38 on the 
190D.
I drove the 240 about 60,000 miles and I've put maybe 45,000 on the 190D so far.
