Apparently pretty common, happened on my 240D two years ago. Rusty has
replacements for MB heaters.

Hi,
Just to share; I lost the block heater in my 1990 6.2 Suburban last
winter and of course I did not want to fight with it,so... I bought a
zero start heater hose type and after that, just to satisfy my mind I did
a test on the cord I pulled off for neatness. BAD CORD !! all 3 wires
broken on a well secured cord I save old cords and replaced it easily
 with an old a/c cord.
  Works like new.
