So HF had these little mini lathes on sale a couple weeks ago for $370
and a 15% off coupon in a flyer I got in the mail, so the whole deal was
like $300 or so. I had been looking at them and doing a bit of research
on these things and mini-mills. Turns out all these things from
different vendors are made in the same factory, spray painted different
colors, and might have some minor feature twiddling, but they are all
basically the same units. A buddy has a mini-mill from some other
vendor, HF sells the same thing, and I saw one at a wholesale tool place
the other day under yet another name, that was exactly the same unit.
They also had some bigger lathes and some large knee mills, exactly the
same as the HF and Grizzly, etc offerings. For casual use, these are
reasonable deals. Would I like an American or Euro unit, or even
Japanese or Taiwanese? Sure, but the price of those is pretty high, and
they don't really have the low-end causal use tools, and I am not
building aircraft or space shuttles. Once I move up then I'll look at
the better stuff, but the Reds have the low-end covered.
