Obviously yes, it takes all the stuff learnt from the 103 and goes up to the
next step but it's drawback is it complexity.
Apart from some of the early ones (3 litre ones) it uses motronic fuel
injection/ignition (2.8 and 3.2 litre) and has 24 valves.
Whilst motronic is more efficient, if there is a problem you'll need a tow.
M103 uses KE jetronic and unless your fuel pump dies will keep going unless
there is an ignition problem but even those are easier to fix.
So it is fair to say that the 103 is a potentially more reliable motor but
the 104 is more efficient.
However from my point of view reliability is more important than efficiency,
fuel usage for the M103 is round about 12-13L/100ks in town (about 8
cruising at 110kmh) the 104 in 2.8 displacement does a bit better around
town but not that much better on the open road. I think the 3.2 litre 104 is
about the same as the 3 litre 103.
Here is a discussion on this topic

So if I was wanting to go fast on the autobahn then yes the M104 would be
better but if I was gonna have a motor that I have to maintain and fix
myself then I would choose a 103, also whilst the 104 has more power it does
not have that much more torque than the 103.
