When we left in 96 the property taxes were nothing short of horrendous. On a house with an assessed value of $150k (market value of around $250k) we were paying $5600/year in property taxes. Ouch. It was especially tough on the retirees and others on fixed incomes. That being said, the schools were nothing short of being top-notch. To get the equivalent quality of education here in Florida, they would have to attend a private school at the tune of about $10k/year in tuition.
