You could try running up the idle stop screw. If it's turbo, you will have to defeat the ALDA, which overrides the idle circuit. The early ones, up through 1979, had a dash mounted idle control. The idle governor wasn't made to hold constant speed under heavy loads, so I don't think the speed regulation will be constant enough to run a genny and maintain reasonable voltage/frequency control. I'd be tempted to get an aftermarked cruise control and run it off the tach amp.
