Back then, Bee-Em-Vay model numbers made sense. 324d was 2.4L inline six, 524td was the same engine in the larger chassis with the turbo. A bit more powerful than a 2.5L mbz turbo, maybe 125-135hp. Much stronger than a 240d. Seems like the top end (valvetrain, head) is less reliable than mbz.
